About Slaney River Valley SAC

The Slaney River Valley Special Area of Conservation (SAC) encompasses a diverse and ecologically important stretch of the River Slaney and its surrounding habitats in Counties Wicklow, Wexford, and Carlow, Ireland. Characterized by riverine woodlands, alkaline fens, alluvial wet meadows, and limestone-based uplands, the area supports a wide variety of rare plant species and wildlife, including protected salmonid fish populations such as Atlantic salmon and sea trout. The river corridor provides essential spawning grounds as well as migratory pathways for these species. In addition to aquatic life, the designated SAC is home to a mosaic of protected flora and fauna including otters, various bat species, and internationally important bird populations. The area is steeped in cultural and historical significance, with numerous old mills, bridges, and villages dotting the valley, reflecting a long history of human settlement and land use shaped by the river. Outdoor recreation opportunities are primarily focused on low-impact activities like walking, birdwatching, and angling in designated areas. The valley's serene landscapes with lush woodlands and meandering river sections attract visitors looking for peaceful nature escapes and photographic opportunities. Conservation efforts emphasize maintaining the natural water quality, protecting habitats from agricultural runoff, and mitigating impacts from development. The Slaney River Valley SAC is an essential refuge for native wildlife and a key part of Ireland’s natural heritage, offering a glimpse into the rich ecological tapestry of the Irish lowland river systems.
